Detroit's Black Fashion Designers Make Waves in Industry

Black History Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of African Americans across all industries. In the world of fashion, Black designers have made significant strides in recent years, and Detroit is no exception. Tracy Reese, the founder of Hope for Flowers, is one of those designers who has made an impact on the industry.

Reese’s resume extends far beyond the Big Apple, with her designs worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, and superstar Taylor Swift, among many others. As a Detroit native, Reese fell in love with fashion at an early age and credits her education at Cass Tech High School for feeding her passion through art and design classes.

When asked how she wants women to feel when wearing her designs, Reese said, “beautiful, confident.” Her commitment to sustainability and community development is evident through her team’s free sewing classes in Detroit and their apprenticeship program.

Chuck Bennet, a Detroit fashion scene veteran, notes that high-end luxury brands are taking notice of the city’s potential and looking to build and manufacture there. The Detroit Fashion Community, a group of fashion enthusiasts, aims to elevate fashion in Detroit, according to Bennet.

One designer who has seen success through the DFC is Quandell Wright, the owner of William Palmer Homme. Wright’s luxury street-wear brand has been worn by celebrities such as Chris Brown and Kevin Hart, but it was his uniquely designed handbags that sold out in just 30 minutes.

Wright, who grew up surrounded by people wearing furs, gators, and Cartier Buffs, draws inspiration from Detroit’s desire to stand out. “We do grind hard, we do dress the best, you know we want to be seen,” he said.

Reese, Wright, and the many other Black designers who are making their mark in the industry are not only making beautiful clothes, but they are also creating opportunities for others and using their platforms to make a difference.
